    Hi Octavia,

I hope you are well. I am writing to let you know about the first ever “Story Time” Gala reception at the DC Public Library (DCPL), on March 16th. The event features prominent chefs, bartenders and performers in effort to raise funds for DCPL’s children’s programs. Derek Brown (Columbia Room, Mockingbird Hill) Erik Bruner-Yang (Toki Underground, Maketto), Johnny Spero (Jose Andre’s Minibar), Colin Sugalski (Toki Underground) and Duane Sylvestre (Collectif 1806) will create unique food and drinks based on their favorite children’s stories. There will be several performances including a musical performance by Walter Martin (The Walkmen).

I thought you may be interested in covering this event in some way for Eater. I have pasted the press release below. Please let me know if you would like to speak with anyone involved or perhaps attend.

    Thanks!

DC Public Library Foundation to Host First-Ever “Story Time” Gala Reception

Featuring Washington’s top chefs and bartenders plus Walter Martin of The Walkmen

performing in support of DC Public Library’s children’s programs

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb 25, 2016)—The DC Public Library Foundation (DCPLF) will host their first ever “Story Time” Gala Reception on Wednesday, March 16 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. The event, which benefits the DC Library’s children’s program, will take place in the Great Hall of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which will be transformed into a wonderland of childhood stories and storytellers. Tickets are available here.

Demonstrating this city’s great love of books, education and children, the Story Time Gala will be an eclectic celebration of the DC Public Library and how children’s books have inspired Washingtonians, including some of DC’s most creative citizens.

The evening will feature some of the District’s most exciting chefs and bartenders, brought together by Derek Brown, DCPLF Board member and District bar owner. Erik Bruner-Yang (Toki Underground and Maketto), Johnny Spero (Jose Andre’s Minibar), Colin Sugalski (Toki Underground) and Duane Sylvestre (Collectif 1806) will create unique food and drinks based on their favorite children’s stories.

“I’m honored to be a part of an event that is bringing so many talented people together in support of such a worthy cause.” says Derek Brown. “Many of our chefs and bartenders and their families use our DC public libraries every day. They want to give back to help other families across the city.”

DC native, Walter Martin (formerly of The Walkmen and recently featured in the New Yorker), will perform songs from his newly released album Arts and Leisure along with some of his old favorites. In addition, there will be short performances by Lean & Hungry Theatre and Free Minds Book Club.

“It is clear that Washington DC residents love the DC Public Library. We have been overwhelmed by the generous support our City’s top companies, civic leaders and chefs have shown for our first ever Story Time Gala Reception. I am excited by the support from across the City and how quickly ticket sales are going,” said Bonnie Cohen, President of the DC Public Library Foundation.

Proceeds from The Story Time Gala will support the DC Public Library Foundation and the Library’s critical children’s programs that serve more than 25,000 children a month in every Ward throughout the District.

“Our programs are critical to families throughout Washington, DC,” said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, Executive Director of the DC Public Library. “Contributions to this event will benefit our myriad programs, from story times at all of our neighborhood libraries, to our Sing, Talk & Read (STAR) early literacy training, as well as the newly-launched Books from Birth program, which provides a book a month to the homes of registered children from birth to five years old.”

Individual tickets for the Story Time Gala are $150. The event has already attracted several major corporate sponsors, including lead sponsor Smoot/Gilbane, and Pepco Holdings, Inc., Google, Venable LLP, Bank of America, Exelon, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, EastBanc/JBG/Clark and others. Sponsorships are available for $5,000. An array of individual Washingtonians have also signed on to host the event ($1,500), including former mayor Anthony Williams, DC Public Library former and present Trustees, DC Public Library Foundation board members, and others.
